“The Fields of Athenry” is an Irish folk ballad that tells the story of a young man named Michael, who is sentenced to transportation to Australia during the Great Irish Famine for stealing food to feed his starving family. Through the sorrowful perspective of his wife, the song expresses themes of love, loss, resilience, and the deep suffering of the Irish people under British rule. With its haunting melody and poignant lyrics, it has become an anthem of Irish identity and perseverance, frequently sung at sporting events, political gatherings, and folk music sessions around the world.
For our version, the tempo and feel are somewhat more upbeat, reflecting a hopeful spirit in the face of challenge.
